Combating the cold with love (and heated blankets)

Hello, everyone! Since the start of the new year, things have been getting colder and colder here in Japan. Yesterday it even SNOWED. I'm a desert rat at heart and being this chilly just makes me cranky. So! To combat the crankiness, I thought I'd pen out of few thoughts on why I like being here, despite the lack of central heating. To the pilot pen, Batman!

There's a million more things, to be sure, but I think I'm pretty warm now. Happy New Year, guys!

(And at the risk of being overwhelmingly annoying about this, would you all do me a big fat favor and visit my contest entry over at Instructables? Maybe vote favorably on it? Thank you all so much. I really want that mixer.)

Expat Experience Matches: Shabu Shabu and Zoos (my kids got to play with a hyena (leashed) and a lemur).

Expat Jealousy: Bread (Thailand likes to mimic it, but they are NOT good at it).

Also if your child is going to continue to speak in Japanese, I'm afraid I have to ask for translations.

A hyena?? RAD. Man, I love foreign zoos. In China, we got to watch a baby chimp, baby jaguar and baby lion wrestle around with each other. I don't know they were all in a room together, but it was by far the cutest thing I've EVER seen.

And I think she said "I am Dutch" but, sadly, her Japanese is much better than mine.

I want to come to Japan and swim in the Shabu Shabu with my chopsticks! I will also eat corn pizza and ignore the Wasabi Flavored bratwurst and spend all day reading on the warm seats.

TMI?

YAY! CORN PIZZA! We will eat all the corn pizza! Japan cordially invites you to a shabu shabu swim at your earlier convenience, friend!

Voted!

At the zoo in Colorado Springs, there's an exhibit where wallabies walk around with you. Only, when we went there it was about to storm, so they were trying to round up the wallabies. One little female wallaby was not cooperating. We spent 15 min. trapped in their enclosure while for zookeepers chased her. Hilarity!

Once upon a time, at a zoo in Nassau, I was physically berated by a flamingo (front of beak = blunt little fist) for, I can only guess, paying more attention to a particular lemur than I was to him? Anyway. Best bruise story ever.

(So thrilled by your Japanese adventures, by the way. I can't wait to know more!)

Kristan - Awwwww! I just had a very clear video in my head of zookeepers chasing around a wallaby to the Benny Hill music. So cute!

Julie - That sounds hilarious...and I agree, a great story for a bruise! Man, those flamingos can be MEAN. When I was 5, a pelican bit my face. AND MOM WONDERS WHY I DON'T LIKE BIG BIRDS.

Wait... what? NO CENTRAL HEATING? Seriously? Does your house ever warm up? Do you wear those adult footie pj's to bed?

And I voted. I thought it was one of the most entertaining recipes I have EVER read. Not to mention the tastiness factor! I forwarded it to several people when I first read it, before I even realized there was a contest just because I knew they'd love it. Here's hoping you get the mixer! Or, you know... a space heater.

Um... the high here was 75*F today. (cringes in fear) I'm sorry!! I swear I had nothing to do with it! It was mother nature, I tell you. Mother NATURE!!!!

I hope you have some pretty sweaters and knit socks to wear. And I'm totally jealous of your zoo.

Peggy - I KNOW. I wear a great deal many things to bed nowadays, not limited to hats, scarves and gloves. We have kerosene heaters, though! But then we have to open windows to ventilate the smell which JUST DEFEATS THE PURPOSE.

And thanks so much for voting! Hot cross buns, here I come (nom)!

Robin - Awwww, I got warm just reading that! Mother Nature works in mysteeeeeerious ways. My zoo is definitely something to be jealous of, I'm not gonna lie. I'll trade you a lemur for an extra ten degrees, though. :D

Having spent an Asian winter with you without central heating before, I know how much you *love* being cold. ;) I wish we'd had heated toilet seats then...

Eeep! Someone who personally knows how cranky I get in the cold!! :D Please don't tell them about the time I almost killed your alarm clock. Ai ni, jiemei!

(Also, I love that you live near Japan's *largest* Holland themed amusement park. How many ARE there? haha!)

What a terrific posting, Marie! So that's why they invented heated toilet seats. Makes perfect sense, within context...

More, more, I say! Please? Can we see MORE about your family's Japan experiences? And hey, have you stocked up on ANNO books — esp the ones you can't get over here? :-P

As a zookeeper-type person, that part kind of made me cringe in fear for your safety. But who knows... maybe we are too lawsuit-oriented in the US? I certainly think *I* should be allowed to play with as many exotic animals as possible...

BTW, are you tweeting when you have new drawgs? I swear I like stalk you but I missed ALL of these!!
